Jack Goes Boating

Jack and Connie are two single people who on their own might continue to recede into the anonymous background of the city, but in each other begin to find the courage and desire to pursue their budding relationship. In contrast, the couple that introduced them, Clyde and Lucy are confronting unresolved issues in their marriage. Jack is a limo driver with vague dreams of landing a job with the MTA and an obsession with reggae that has prompted him to begin a half-hearted attempt at growing dreadlocks. He spends most of his time hanging out with his best friend and fellow driver Clyde and Clyde's wife Lucy. The couple set Jack up with Connie, Lucy's co-worker at a Brooklyn funeral home. Being with Connie inspires Jack to learn to cook, pursue a new career and take swimming lessons from Clyde so he can give Connie the romantic boat ride she dreams of. But as Jack and Connie cautiously circle commitment, Clyde and Lucy's marriage begins to disintegrate. From there, we watch as each couple comes face to face with the inevitable path of their relationship.

The Town 2010

The Town is a very solid sophomore outing for director/writer/actor Ben Affleck. The bank heist action-drama taut, well-acted, and pulls of something a lot of films fail to do: make you root for the protagonists.

The story centers on the lives of bank robbery crew from Charlestown, a neighborhood in Boston that's said to be the capital of bank robbery in the world. Ben Affleck is Doug Macray, the leader of the group who fins himself torn between his bank robbing roots and the the desire to change. Ironically, it is through a manager of a bank (played by Rebecca Hall) that the group robbed that triggers the change in Doug. By the time the movie is almost over, I'm sure you're pulling for the two to escape the vicious the two are in.

The thing I didn't like about this film is the thick Bostonian accent-- and this was the same thing I didn't like about Gone Baby Gone. There were a lot of times I didn't understand what the heck the characters were saying.

Is The Town worthy to be in the Oscars discussions this soon? Yes, if you ask me. I see Oscar nominations for Ben Affleck and Rebecca Hall. Book it.

After Life 2009

Icky, nasty, calculatingly odd and a little funny, though more often strained and inadvertently absurd, “After.Life” changes its mood and apparent intentions from scene to scene, sometimes minute to minute. The period separating the words in the title probably alludes to the liminal state in which the heroine finds herself, though it might also be a way to distinguish this movie from others with the same name. Whatever the case, the little dot underscores the rather large conceits that sabotage what might have been a promising horror flick if not for the writing, acting, editing and consistently inconsistent tone.
